Nguyen Trung Truc Temple

Nguyen Trung Truc is a Vietnamese hero and on Phu Quoc Island, they built a temple to honor his spirit.

How fearsome was that fisherman!
His great talent is admired by all! Burning the French ship at Nhat Tao village, Leveling the French ramparts at Kiên Giang, Opposing the common enemies of people and king.
Having sworn to risk his life for the country, His memory will be rewarded for one thousand years. What an example of our righteous and faithful people.

Poem to Nguyễn Trung Trực - by Emperor Tự Đức

Nguyen Trung Truc

Nguyen Trung Truc was a fisherman native to Vietnam's Kien Giang province. He and his freedom fighters opposed the French occupation and applied a variety of guerilla warfare strategies against the colonial powers. The sinking of the French ironclad warship “L'Espérance” on 10th of December 1861 was their greatest coup.

He was eventually captured and executed on 27th of October 1868 in Phu Quoc Prison. Whilst Emperor Tu Duc reminded Truc to honor the Treaty of Saigon that granted Saigon and the southern provinces to the French colonial powers, he was proud of the resistance of the Vietnamese people and formulated the above poem to honor the partisans.

Nguyen Trung Truc temple got erected to memorize him, his soldiers and the Vietnamese struggle for independence. It is located in Ganh Dau, at the northwestern tip of Phu Quoc Island and is a peaceful and silent place of meditation.

If you happen to visit Ganh Dau, drop by the temple and read the story of Truc on wooden boards. Sit in the shadow of the trees, enjoy the silence and have some cool water. I have to admit however, that the temple is not amazing enough to be the single goal of an expedition to this remote part of the island (together with Ganh Dau Beach however, and with a short visit to Rach Vem fishing village, Nguyen Trung Truc temple might be part of an active day's itinerary).
